A Summer Read about Friendship, Tragedy, and Finding Your Way Back
One of my goals this summer has been to read books that are outside of my usual comfort zone (aka: not thrillers). The Summer Pact by Emily Giffin caught my eye – first with its cover art (as usual), and then with its compelling back-cover description. While it’s different from what I typically reach for, this story of friendship, healing, and emotional growth pulled me in from the first chapter.
At its core, The Summer Pact follows four college friends – Lainey, Hannah, Tyson and Summer – who meet during their freshman year. Their bond is tested and reshaped by a tragic event during their senior year; in the aftermath, they make a pact to always be there and show up for each other, no matter what or where life takes them. Giffin explores how grief lingers, how relationships evolve, and how the people we meet in our formative years can continue to shape us long after graduation.
As someone who still has a close group of college friends, the dynamic between these characters felt similar. Life takes everyone in different directions and we may go periods of time without catching up with each other, but the shared history remains. That’s exactly what Giffin has captured.
Themes of Grief, Healing & Emotional Growth
There were moments in this book that made me tear up, so be warned that there may be some crying involved in your reading. Giffin writes grief in a subtle way, often letting the character’s actions (or silences) speak louder than any explanation. It’s one of the reasons this story felt so real and resonated with me.
Each character carried their own emotional weight, and by the end each one has experienced meaningful growth. Lainey, in particular, frustrated me throughout most of the book but her arc pays off at the end. Watching her evolve made the ending feel hopeful and earned.
The group’s bond strengthens as they navigate adulthood, heartbreak, and the lingering impact of their shared past. By the final chapters, their friendship feels deeper, intentional, and resilient.
A Quote That Stayed with Me
One of my favorite lines from the end of the book perfectly captures its message:
“Our lives will never be perfect, nor will the photos we take. What matters is that we are all doing our best. We are showing up for one another, even when things get rough, and against all odds, we are finding our way to happiness.”
It’s the kind of sentiment that lingers long after you close the book. What began as a story rooted in tragedy ultimately becomes a story of true growth, healing and the strength of friendship – and that’s what we can all hope for in life, right? I landed on a 4/5 latte rating because the emotional impact, character development, and hopeful ending resonated with me, though a few moments and character choices didn’t fully hit the mark for me. If you enjoy character-driven, emotional fiction, The Summer Pact is a great addition to your summer reading list.
